Comparison between Rayleigh and Mie Scattering Assumptions for Z-R Relation and Rainfall Rate Estimation with TRMM/PR Data

چکیده
Comparison of the rain rate estimated with the assumptions of Rayleighand Mie scattering is made. We analyzed the different relationships between the radar reflective factor and rain rate (so-called Z-R relationship) with both scattering models for different DSD (droplet size distribution) and rainfall types as the wavelength is 2.2cm which is in accord with the band of TRMM/PR. Meanwhile we introduced a discrete ordinates method to retrieve the Z-R relationship for Mie scattering assumption. It is found that the retrieval result can be represented as the sum of some simple Z-R relationships. By the analysis of the Z-R relationships estimated from Rayleigh and Mie scattering assumptions in the rain types, we found that the difference of Z-R relationships between Rayleigh and Mie scattering in the thunderstorm that represents the larger raindrop size is larger than that in the drizzle that represent the smaller raindrop size. Study of spatial and temporal rain and drought patterns in the south of Iran using TRMM
Droughts are one of the most damaging climatic phenomena, and the most complex natural hazard which affects the economy, agriculture, public health and environment in large areas. The aim of this study is to compare drought indicators derived from tropical rainfall measuring mission (TRMM) data in the south of Iran. Also the TRMM rainfall was considered, so as to investigate changes in the rai...

متن کاملThe Evolution of the Goddard Profiling Algorithm (GPROF) for Rainfall Estimation from Passive Microwave Sensors
This paper describes the latest improvements applied to the Goddard profiling algorithm (GPROF), particularly as they apply to the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM). Most of these improvements, however, are conceptual in nature and apply equally to other passive microwave sensors. The improvements were motivated by a notable overestimation of precipitation in the intertropical converge...

Methods for size distribution estimation and rainfall type discrimination with estimated phase function using measured reflected laser light by rain droplet are proposed. Preliminary experiments are conducted with Laser ranging instrument and spectral radiometer for estimation of size distribution and rainfall type discrimination as well as phase function of scattering by rain drops. متن کاملEffect of Non-Uniform Beam-filling on TRMM PR Rainfall Measurements
We investigate effects of non-uniform beam-filling on TRMM PR rain retrieval using data from the NASAIJPL Airborne Rain MApping Radar (ARMAR) acquired during TOGA COARE in early 1993. Our approach is to simulate TRMM PR observations using the ARMAR data and compare the radar observable and retrieved rain rate from the simulated PR data with those corresponding to the high-resolution radar measu...
